Dole won the Medal of Honor in World War II, rising to the rank of Colonel. He was subsequently elected to the Senate in 1956, serving two terms. He was defeated for reelection in 1972, leaving the Senate after 22 years.
Dole lost the Republican presidential nomination to Ronald Reagan in 1980. He was later elected to the House of Representatives, serving from 1981 to 1996.
Dole was diagnosed with dementia in his final years. At the time of his passing, he was in the midst of a battle with his ex-wife, Elizabeth.
